Diabetes affects many adults, and its influence reaches beyond blood sugar levels. The feet can experience changes that develop slowly and go unnoticed until they become serious. Because the feet carry the weight of daily movement, they tend to reflect some of the earliest signs of diabetes-related health shifts. Understanding the connection between diabetes and foot health can help people take practical steps to protect their mobility with the help of a podiatrist.

How Does Diabetes Affect Feet?

Diabetes influences the feet primarily through two pathways: nerve function and blood flow. When blood sugar stays elevated over long periods, it can gradually damage the nerves throughout the body. This condition is called peripheral neuropathy, and damaged nerves may reduce a person’s ability to feel sensations such as heat, cold, pressure, or pain. Someone with reduced sensation can develop a blister without noticing it.

Elevated blood sugar may narrow and stiffen blood vessels, and this limits the amount of blood that reaches the lower limbs. Minor injuries heal more slowly than they otherwise would as a result. The skin on the feet may also become dry or cracked, creating openings where problems are able to begin. These two factors change how the feet respond to everyday wear.

What Complications Does It Cause?

Several foot complications are associated with diabetes, and their severity may range from mild to significant. Left unaddressed, these complications can affect a person’s ability to walk comfortably. Common concerns include:

  • Foot Ulcers: These are open sores that often form on the bottom of the foot or over pressure points, which can go unnoticed until they grow larger or become infected.
  • Infections: Slow healing and reduced circulation allow bacteria to spread more readily.
  • Calluses and Corns: Areas of thickened skin can form where pressure builds, and these areas may break down and turn into ulcers.
  • Changes in Foot Shape: In some cases, nerve damage affects the bones and joints, leading to structural changes that alter how a person walks.

Regular monitoring helps catch small issues before they progress.

How Are They Treated?

A podiatrist is a medical professional who focuses on the feet, ankles, and related structures. For individuals with diabetes, a podiatrist offers ongoing evaluation and care designed to support foot health. During an appointment, the podiatrist typically examines the skin, and they can assess circulation in the feet. Treatment approaches vary based on each person’s needs. A podiatrist may:

  • Remove calluses and corns safely to reduce pressure points.
  • Clean and dress wounds or ulcers to support healing.
  • Recommend footwear or orthotic inserts that redistribute pressure.
  • Monitor changes in foot structure and suggest supportive devices when needed.

A podiatrist can also educate patients on daily self-care practices, such as inspecting the feet and keeping skin moisturized. This partnership between patient and provider forms the structure of long-term foot management. A person may not detect these subtle changes on their own, and routine visits allow the podiatrist to identify them.

Meet With a Podiatrist

Foot health plays a role in the overall well-being of people living with diabetes. Early attention and steady care can make a meaningful difference, helping to prevent discomfort. Scheduling regular appointments with a podiatrist gives you a reliable way to stay informed about the condition of your feet, and they allow you to address concerns as they arise.
