The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) reflects how well the kidneys filter waste from the blood; monitoring kidney function helps physicians make informed decisions about ongoing treatment. Nuclear medicine can measure GFR using a radiotracer that the kidneys process, allowing for a precise assessment of renal function. This measurement may be recommended for IBD because some medications used to manage the condition may affect the kidneys. A nuclear GFR study is particularly useful when accurate values are needed to guide medication dosing or to track changes across follow-up visits.
